Why we have a club
There
is one simple reason that we have a Westie Club and that is because
we love our little white dogs called Westies and we want to support
the breed. Our club provides an organization where we can associate
with other people who love Westies. It is a place where we can
learn new things about Westies, share our experiences and their
antics, whether they are couch potatoes or performers in the ring.
Our
club was formed by a group of Westie lovers in 1951. The club
is sanctioned by The American Kennel Club (AKC) as a Specialty
Breed Club. As part of that contract, the AKC requires us to do
certain things. We must hold at least one Match a year (conformation
and obedience) and we are required to hold a conformation show
during the year (the June Specialty).

Code
of Ethics
The
West Highland White Terrier Club of California recognizes its
responsibility to preserve and protect the West Highland White
Terrier. It further recognizes that the quality and reputation
of the breed rests squarely in the hands of its breeders. Therefore,
as guidance both to the public and its member breeders, the West
Highland White Terrier Club of California sets forth below certain
standards of conduct to be followed by its members. Membership
in the West Highland White Terrier Club of California assumes
acceptance of and adherence to this code.
1. Members will at all times act in the interest of the breed
and in the interest of the well being of individual dogs and in
a manner in keeping with the aims and interest of the West Highland
White Terrier Club of California.
2. Members will keep their dogs in an environment and under a
regime that as far as is possible ensures the well being of the
dog.
3. No member will knowingly sell a West Highland White Terrier
of any age to any pet shop, catalogue house, laboratory, or any
wholesale dealer in dogs, or to any person who sells to pet shops,
catalogue houses, laboratories, or wholesale dealers (a dealer
being a person who regularly buys stock for sale at profit). No
member will in any way knowingly aid or abet the sale of any West
Highland White Terrier through a pet shop or catalogue house.
Members will not knowingly offer stud service to wholesale dealers
or to any person involved with pet shops, catalogue houses, or
laboratories.
4. All members will be familiar with the American Kennel Club
rules governing record keeping, registration and sale and transfer
of dogs and will abide by these rules. Any warranties or other
agreements pertaining to the sale of a Westie will be put in writing,
with a copy to the buyer.
5. A member selling an adult dog or puppy which he/she knows to
be an inferior specimen of the breed not suitable for competition
in conformation classes, or to have a physical condition which
indicates that the breeding of the animal would be detrimental
to the breed, shall so inform the buyer in writing. The sale shall
be made with agreements in writing, signed by both buyer and seller,
that the dog is not be bred, is to be spayed or neutered and that
AKC registration papers will be delivered to buyer upon receipt
by seller of proof of spaying or neutering.
6.
All breedings will be planned with the aim of improving the breed,
with consideration given to type, temperament, health, and soundness.
All members will be familiar with the Standard of the breed and
will discourage matings between clearly inferior specimens of
the breed; stud service will be refused to clearly inferior specimens
of the breed. No dog exhibiting a hereditary health defect, unsound
temperament or poor health will be bred, except as a test breeding
to determine the genetic composition of the mate. Any puppies
resulting from test breedings for serious hereditary defects will
be placed as in Paragraph 5, unless the puppy is placed for the
purpose of test breeding only.
7.
If a dog or bitch produces offspring with a serious defect or
genetically transmitted disease, the owner must disclose the information
to the prospective breeder or stud owner when negotiating a breeding
with another owner.
8.
No member-breeder will breed a bitch unless he/she has the time
and facilities to devote proper care and attention to the physical
and emotional development of the puppies and to the well being
of the dam. No puppy will be placed in a new home before the pup
is weaned, tested clear of internal parasites, and had its first
vaccination. No member should provide stud service unless he/she
is satisfied that the owner of the bitch has such time and facilities
necessary for proper development of the pups.
9.
A bitch should be mated no more than two out of three successive
seasons (assuming that litters result) and never without due regard
for the health and well being of the bitch.
10.
Advertising by members will be as factual as possible. Misleading
exaggerations or unfounded implications of superiority will not
be used.
11.
Members will refrain from knowingly making unfair or untrue statements
about the dogs or practices of others.

WHWTCC
Club History
The
West Highland White Terrier Club of California began in 1951
at the Long Beach Kennel Club All Breed Benched Show. A group
of breeder/exhibitors, headed by Miss Laura Sutherland, was
formed to look into the possibility of starting a local West
Highland White Terrier Club.
On September 24, 1951, the formation meeting was held at the
home of Mr. And Mrs. Arthur Creaney in El Monte. Founding members
were Art and Winogene Creaney, Ben and Vivian Gillette, Adeline
Huff, Don and Hazel Setterfield, Laura Sutherland, Alma Voskuhler,
Margaret Barr, John and Donna Donivan, Mr. And Mrs. James Green,
Walter Huff, Leona Lee, and Ruth Murgatroyd.
These
founders had the onerous tasks of getting The West Highland
White Terrier Club of America approval, preparing and submitting
to AKC a constitution and bylaws with a list of charter members.
They also came up the club name: West Highland White Terrier
Club of California. The reply from the parent club received
July 2, 1951 stated that AKC had jurisdiction. The approval
of AKC was received from Mr. A. Dick on November 12, 1951.
The
first sanctioned A match was held on May 4, 1952 at the Creaney
home, as were many of the early matches according to long time
members.
The
first Specialty Show was held September 9, 1953 at The Beverly
Rivera Kennel Club Show in Santa Monica, California. Best of
Breed was Am. Can. Ch. Heathertykes Duncan owned by Ruth M.
Murgatroyd. Best Opposite Sex was Heatherbelle Miss Muffett
owned by Laura B. Sutherland.
The
first club bulletin, called the West Highland White Terrier
Club of California Bulletin, was edited by Margaret Barr and
later evolved in to the California Highlander. Sometime in the
late 70’s, David Ogg designed the tradmark club logo.
Mr. Ogg’s Westie artwork also took the shape of the club’s
Best in Match trophies during the 70’s according to Diana
Belles, as well as the Most Valuable Member Perpetual Trophy.
Through
the years there were always a few members of the West Highland
White Terrier Club of California who were interested in obedience,
but in the 1980’s a number of owners active in obedience
joined the club. They included Cathleen Blatler, Peggy Sparks,
Susan Budge Porter, Mary Kuhlman, Renee Glover, Marcia Lozes,
Sherron Corner, Carla Barbula and Jeanine Albaneze.
In
1987, becoming licensed to hold AKC Obedience Trials was first
discussed. A fun match was held on April 9, 1988 in San Diego.
There were ten Westies entered in all of the regular obedience
classes, and the non-regular class Graduate Novice. By September,
the entry grew to 12 and the club was on its way.
The
first obedience trial was held by the WHWTCC on Friday June
21, 1991 and 26 Westies were entered from as far away as Texas.
High in Trial was awarded to Renee Glover and Happymac’s
Duke of Bertshire, CD from the Open A Class with a score of
198 out of 200. The following day the WHWTCC hosted the first
obedience trial to be held in conjunction with a West Highland
White Terrier Club of America Roving Specialty show. Again with
an entry of 26 Westies, Ms. Glover and Bert took High in Trial
with a score of 199 under judge Mrs. Dorothy McCauley.
In
addition to breed and obedience competitions, the WHWTCC has
maintained a rescue program for Westies in need over the years.
With the help of many volunteers we have been able to re-home
misplaced or abandoned Westies. Each year the club also honors
the achievements of the membership and their Westies in December
at the Annual Awards Luncheon.
The
West Highland White Terrier Club today continues its relationship
with the Great Western Terrier Association by holding its annual
Specialty in conjunction with their weekend of shows, supporting
entry in GWTA, the Sunday all-breed kennel club show and the
Monday and Tuesday Earthdog Trials. In June 2007 the WHWTCC
is pleased to again host the WHWTCA Roving Specialty Show for
an extended weekend of “Westies at the Beach”.
